(#8322) Toilet size requirements as per local bye- laws and NBC

Query

This is regarding toilet requirement for physically handicapped as per GRIHA criterion for universal accessibility for a project registered under GRIHA v.3.1 and is currently 5-star Pre-Certified. The Project is located in Gurugram, Haryana.
There are two design guidelines for sizing of the toilets for differently abled as stated under NBC, 2016:
Type A accessible toilet room shall meet the following requirements:
a) It shall have minimum internal dimensions 2200 mm × 2300 mm.

Type B accessible toilet room shall
have minimum i
However, the toilet sizing requirement for physically handicapped as per Haryana Building Code (HBC) is less stringent than NBC, 2016. It says the minimum size of the toilet for physically handicapped shall be 1.50 m x 1.75 m.
Can the project show GRIHA compliance by meeting the minimum requirements as per Haryana Building Code, 2017 or is it mandatory to show compliance through NBC only?nternal dimensions of 1700 mm × 2200 mm.

Solution

As defined in the Haryana bye-laws, the minimum size of the toilet should be 1.50 m x 1.75 m and there is no upper cap for the same. Further the Haryana bye-laws also do not override the NBC requirements, therefore project teams are recommended to follow design guidelines laid under NBC.
