(#8443) Lux level and uniformity ratio in open offices

Query

1. In open plan work office where we have workstations and circulation zone, the illumination is to be provided as open office illumination (300-500-700 Lux) or the space has to be divided as working zone and circulation zone separately and then the illuminations will be met as per their respective recommended values?

2. In an office space should the NBC recommended illumination (300-500-700 Lux) and uniformity factor of 0.4 be provided only above the workstation table top where work will be carried out or entire office/room area at working plane height?

Solution

1. In an open plan work office where we have workstations and circulation zones, the illumination is to be provided as open office illumination.

2. As stated in NBC 2005 Part 8; Section 1; Page No.12; Clause 4.1.3.4 the illumination levels recommended in Table 4 are to be maintained at workstations only whereas, uniformity ratio should be maintained over the entire office area.
