Are circulation spaces like corridor, lift lobby, entrance hall and other spaces like waiting areas, reception area in an office building included in daylight calculations?

Query

Are circulation spaces like corridor, lift lobby, entrance hall and other spaces like waiting areas, reception area in an office building included in daylight calculations? If yes, then kindly suggest Daylight Factor for spaces like Waiting and Reception areas

Solution

According to Criterion 13 (GRIHA V 3), The percentage of day lighted area is calculated by dividing the day lighted area by the total living area of the proposed building. GRIHA has standardized the definition of living area as per SP 41. Table 2 (part 4) of SP 41 highlights the types of living spaces followed by respective building types that are specified from the daylight requirement point of view.

Therefore, as per the daylight clause, the living area is limited to only those categories of spaces that are specified in the table 13.2 or for spaces of similar activities.

Circulation spaces like Corridor, Lift Lobby in an office building can be exempted from the daylight calculations. However, waiting areas, entrance hall & reception area in an Office Building are included in Daylight Calculations and a Daylight Factor of 0.625 has to be met.
